121 – From Rootlessness to Rootedness: Decolonizing Housing and Homeless Services

October 30, 2025
1:30 PM - 2:45PM

Indigenous homelessness goes beyond lacking a physical roof. It is rooted in colonial policies that sever ties to community, family, land, culture, identity, and spirituality.

In Brantford, which borders Six Nations (the largest First Nations reserve in Canada) over half of those experiencing homelessness identify as Indigenous. To support this community, Brantford Native Housing (BNH), an ONPHA award-winning provider, offers culturally appropriate housing and services tailored to urban Indigenous residents.

Together with academic partners, BNH led a collaborative research project exploring tenants’ housing and support needs. Using storytelling and the powerful metaphor of moving from rootlessness to rootedness, you’ll hear narratives that illuminate the path toward healing and reconnection.

Gain actionable insights on:

  • How settler-imposed interventions perpetuate disconnection
  • How Indigenous-led initiatives restore culture, identity, and community
  • How investing in Indigenous self-determination supports true reconciliation and makes homelessness a preventable injustice
