Peter Zimmerman
Peter Zimmerman is a Senior Director in the Development Division at Toronto Community Housing Corporation and leads the revitalization of Regent Park, Canada’s largest and oldest public housing project. Peter began his involvement at Regent in the 1990s as a student volunteer assisting tenants who were then initiating discussions about rebuilding their homes. Subsequently, as young planner, Peter worked on the original revitalization master plan, a 25-year vision of how Regent Park could be transformed into a mixed-income, mixed-use community and be knitted back into the fabric of the city.
Later, after a career in private and public real estate development, Peter returned to Regent Park to lead the final phases of revitalization. This work has included a community-based rezoning of the final 6.5 ha of the project and plans for 11 multi-residential buildings, over 3,000 new homes, community spaces and a public library.
In addition to his work in Regent Park, Peter is a Board member of the Parkdale Community Land Trust and West Neighbourhood House, a community service agency in downtown Toronto. Peter is an Adjunct Professor in the Program in Planning at the University of Toronto and is a Registered Professional Planner.
